This is a movie directed by Akiva Schaffer. As far as I know he is a writer for Saturdaynightlive and has not done much more than that.

The casting for the movie did have some big name which included Sissy Spacek and Ian McShane (Deadwood) Will Arnet and Isla Fisher (Wedding Crashers). The lead was by an actor named Andy Samburg (Rod Kimble) and his gang which included Jamora Taccone (Kevin Powell), Danny R. McBride (Rico) and Bill Hader (Dave). I believe Bill Hader to be one of the strong up and coming screen comedians.

Going into the movie I did not read any of the reviews and only used the trailer as reference. The movie appeared to be one which was of the same humor as Napoleon Dynamite, the love it or hate it humor. Personally I enjoyed Napoleon Dynamite and had probably to high expectations for this movie.

The intro for this movie was a disappointment because it was one of the funny parts of the trailer. I can not stand it when a movie does this. If you are going to hit me up front with an off the bat gag let it be something which I have not already seen.

From there on, the movie followed the same direction; all the funny parts were summed up in the trailer. The character development of the movie did not happen for the most part. I mean you got the idea of who the main character was and why he was doing what he was doing but you still sat there saying “what?”. As for the other characters there was not much to say about them.

The plot was awful. It appeared the director was going for something where the plot was so off the wall that it would be funny but in my opinion it did the exact opposite. It was so off the wall the jokes could not keep up. I felt like the jokes had a good start and the content was ok but the delivery was poor. One where you as the audience are sitting there saying to yourself “man, that would have better if they did this or that”. The ending was stupid. By the time we got to the ending, I was so done with the movie. It tried to have its coming to be a man ending and everyone is happy but it was just a flop.

On a positive note I think Bill Hader (Dave) was the funniest person in the movie. The few lines they had him say were well executed and quite funny. As said before I hope to see this actor in more movies and I believe he is one of a few comedians who can make it.

This movie does have its laughs and may be a decent rental but I do not recommend it for anyone in the theater.
